So Ginger and I just got back from watching The Dark Knight on 42nd Street and I thought I would try my hand at being a movie reviewer. My inspiration would have to be a funny, fat gay man who used to review movies when I was very young and strangely enough he was at school with my best friends mother.......... (You will find out I carry on about silly things quite often)
So, back to The Dark Knight. I was lucky enough to be around for the release of the very first Batman movie in ohhhhh I want to say 1989 and I did at that stage not think I would ever see a better villan than Jack Nicholson as the aptly named "Joker" character. So after watching The Dark Knight.....(Hold on a minute. As I may be saying this a few more times we are now calling the movie under review TDK......And no this is not an abbreviasion for that really useful invention called a "tape" but the moniker for our movie we are reviewing) I have decided that Nicholson is still the king but Heath Ledger, may he rest in peace, comes a very close second. Heath did a magnificent job of playing a mildly pshycotic, completely sadistic and hugely amusing Joker. He doesn't get enough screen time for my liking as I am a sucker for the "comic relief". In TDK the comic relief and the evil villan is one and the same person...........we give you Mr. TDK, I'm not there, Candy, Casanova, Brokeback Mountain, Lords of Dogtown, Ned Kelly, A Knight's Tale, 10 things I hate about you!!!
I guess I would have to comment on Christian Bale as well. He is a believable enough Batman and he does bring some emotionality to the role so we are all good there. The movie is good as well. It is shot in a modern day Gotham City which I enjoyed but in truth the old Gotham was a lot more realistic and impressive. There was a little sortie to Hong Kong which I did not care for much......Not sure what it was doing in this movie but I did enjoy one of the most beautiful harbours in th world. The movie works. It is a new age mix of a classic DC comic and I was enthralled for the best part of its 2.25 hour running time........The final verdict. See TDK even if it is only for the final hoorah of Heath Ledger or only because you are a Batman fan. I liked it and I'm giving it a big 7/10....Thanks Barry!
